Siamese cat

The War of the Roses

Mercedes is the household’s spayed Siamese cat, a small but recurring presence in scenes of domestic care. She moves between kitchen shelves and a sunny room of plants, appearing in Ann’s memory of meeting Barbara Rose and later in Barbara’s solitary work at home; when the family leaves for Boston, Ann promises to feed her.

Introduction and First Encounter

Ann’s recollection of meeting Barbara Rose includes a vivid moment with Mercedes. As Barbara explained her need for help with the children and the household, she lifted the cat from an open upper shelf, where Mercedes was wedged between a can of Crisco and a box of brown sugar. The cat snuggled against Ann’s hair and shared a brief Eskimo kiss before jumping down and scurrying to a sunny adjoining room filled with plants.

The encounter gives Mercedes a distinct physical presence: she is handled affectionately, but soon leaves the conversation on her own terms. In Ann’s memory, the cat’s warmth and quick departure belong to the ordinary, intimate texture of the home in which Barbara is arranging a new working life.

In the Kitchen

Later, while Ann and the children study in their rooms, Barbara is alone in the kitchen preparing chicken stock. Benny’s persistent bark sounds in the distance, while Mercedes sleeps on one of the top kitchen shelves. The cat remains apart from Barbara’s concentrated cooking, occupying the elevated domestic space above the work in progress.

The scene places Mercedes among the household’s familiar routines rather than at the center of its conflict. Her stillness contrasts with the sounds and activity around her: Benny barks, Barbara prepares the stock, and the cat sleeps overhead.

Care During the Family’s Absence

When Barbara plans a weekend trip to Boston with the children, Ann helps them pack and writes down Barbara’s extensive instructions, mainly about shopping and defrosting so Barbara can return to her commitments on Monday morning. Ann also promises to feed Mercedes.

That practical promise makes the cat part of the household’s arrangements even while its members are away. Mercedes is not given a separate plot or an expressed perspective; her appearances instead show the everyday care that continues alongside the Roses’ strained relationships and the changing responsibilities within their home.
